Why now

Democracy is in decline—but we can turn it around

Representative, accountable, trustworthy governance does not renew itself. It depends on people and organizations with the ideas, capacity, and tools to make democratic power real.

Democracy is under pressure. Freedom House and V-Dem document a sustained global decline in political rights, civil liberties, and democratic governance that is accelerating. Civic space is narrowing, public trust is fraying, and institutions are struggling to respond to a faster, more fragmented world.

The organizations that make democracy possible around the globe are being constrained. Civic organizations help people organize, speak, solve problems, build communities, and hold power accountable. Yet the sudden contraction of democracy assistance is forcing many to reduce staff, suspend programs, or close, as the When Aid Fades report details. Funding is tightening just as cross-border collaboration and civic action face growing restrictions.

The information environment rewards manipulation. Authoritarian tactics are not limited to authoritarian governments: any actor can use technology and AI to confuse, divide, or manufacture the appearance of public support. Online spaces are more manipulated than ever, making it harder for credible democratic voices to reach people and earn trust.

The future is ours to shape. We know more than ever about how people participate, how trust is built, how networks create power, and how technology can lower barriers to action. New Democracy Studio brings those insights together with practical experience—generating ideas, convening people who can sharpen them, and testing programs that can help democracy evolve.

Ideas & Convening

Generating and promoting new approaches to democracy in the age of AI

New Democracy Studio creates space for critical, timely perspectives that can change how key actors understand challenges to democracy—and what to do next.

Connected civic voices and institutions

We develop and publish analysis at the intersection of democracy, technology, and the information environment, bring people together around the questions it raises, and look for ideas that can be tested in practice.

Experts, academics, public officials, private-sector leaders, and civic actors come together to help us challenge assumptions, compare experience across sectors and borders, and see possibilities that would be difficult to find alone.

Convening is how we generate and road-test ideas.

Programs

From ideas to greater democratic impact

Our programs build practical capabilities, stronger relationships, and approaches that can be tested in context, improved, and scaled.

Adam Fivenson

Chief Democracy Officer

After two decades working in technology, global affairs, and democracy support, I have learned that democracy depends on people knowing they have the power to shape their own futures. Civic organizations make that power real: they help people organize, speak, solve problems, and hold institutions accountable.
